Bugblot & The Shocking Confusion – Improve Your Petrol (12″ Mini Album – 1991)

Released in 1991 on Naked Brain, Bugblot & The Shocking Confusion’s debut album “Improve Your Petrol” is the last release on the defunct label ran by Gaye Byker’s On Acid. I’m a big fan of GBOA and I came across this band on discogs.com after searching through Naked Brain releases.

Fronted by Karl Leiker, who went on to form Hyperhead with ex-GBOA singer Mary Byker and Martin Atkins of Killing Joke and Pigface (along with Mary), Bugblot’s album is a great collection of alternative space/stoner rock tracks which engulf the listener through a kaleidoscope of sludgy guitar riffing, tripped out rock and tight bass riffs. Highlights include the upbeat ‘Double Decker’, the stoned groove of ‘Remembering The Future In The Past’ and the Middle East tinged sound of ‘Andy Sinatra The Mystic Barber’. A hidden gem and great music to lay back and zone out to.

If you like this, check our Bugblot’s debut single ‘Steeple‘.

Morris Minor And The Majors – Stutter Rap (No Sleep Til Bedtime) (7″ Single – 1988)

I remember my auntie giving me a copy of “Now That’s What I call Music! 11” on cassette when I was about 8 in the mid 90s. The three songs which stood out were “Beat Dis”by Bomb The Bass, “Doctorin’ The House” by Coldcut and “Stutter Rap (No Sleep Til Bedtime)” – all of which were showcases of the newly emerged hip-hop sounds of the 80s. The odd one out of course is Stutter Rap which was an obvious parody of the Beastie Boys fronted by Tony Hawks (not the skateboarder). I thought the song was hilarious as a kid and its even better as an adult.

Anyway, I stumbled across the 7″ single and had a listen to the B-side, entitled “Another Boring B-side”. The song features minimal production but is probably funnier than the A-side. Well, in a cheesy sorta way. Anyway, as I love collecting B-sides, bootlegs, demos etc of bands I figured I needed a place to dump all this stuff so why not share it with the world? The title of this blog is an ironic tribute to the Morris Minor And The Majors track; I love B-sides. B-sides often enabled artists to showcase something different, experimental, creative or down right odd. Or just ‘boring’ as Morris Minor would say.

Anyway, enjoy my first post:
